Those Treacherous 12th House Sign Aspects

You lose your keys or gloves, you forget to purchase some item, take the wrong medicine, or miss an appointment or payment -these are some of the things that can happen during a 12th house semi-sextile aspect, which in my opinion is perhaps the most treacherous aspect in astrology. When I say twelfth house aspects I don't necessarily mean they are coming from the twelfth house sector of a chart, but that they are from the previous sign.

Normally, the square and opposition are touted as the worst aspects in astrology, but I wouldn't go as far with the opposition which is more of a balancing aspect than a conflicting one. The semi-sextile, and inconjuct(also called quincunx), can be just as bad and sometimes worse than the square, depending on the planets involved, and whether it's an aqualine(loss) or terraline(gain) aspect.

The bad planets are Mars, Saturn, Neptune, Pluto, and sometimes Uranus,. The aqualine aspects(my new term for them) are the 4th, 8th, and 12th house aspects(by sign), and the terraline are the 2nd, 6th, and 10th house aspects(by sign). The opposition aspect isn't necessarily bad and often advantageous -unless you find it difficult to cooperate or compromise, as it always implies dealings with others. The square, on the other hand, forces you to take action or make a decision which can be weakening(4th) or advantageous(10th).

This has been the problem in astrology for a long time: not recognizing the duality of the so-called bad(and good) aspects in astrology. Here we will deal with the bad aspects of the square, semi-sextile, and inconjunct. There is a good and bad square, a good and bad semi-sextile, and a good and bad inconjunct, at least from an individual perspective. Trines and sextiles are also dual but both sides are positive. Only the conjunction and opposition are singular and can be positive or negative depending on the planets involved or the condition of the natal positions.

The bad square(4th house aspect) usually implies some emotional or domestic problem unless good planets like Sun, Moon, Venus, and Jupiter are involved(Mercury is neutral), or the particular aspect is positive in the natal chart. Regardless, there is always some loss or adjustment to be made. With the good square(10th house aspect), there is usually some advancement or promotion involved that is presented to the native, unless poorly aspected in the chart or bad planets are involved.

The bad inconjunt(8th house aspect) is often associated with death or termination of some kind unless very positively configured natally. It is the possess, destroy, or elimination aspect in astrology. The good inconjuct(6th house aspect) usually implies the resolution or improvement of some health or work issue. It is the "fix it" aspect in astrology.

The bad semi-sextile(12th house aspect) is one of loss, treachery, or self-undoing. It is in my opinion the most debilitating aspect in astrology. It brings deception, confusion, forgetfulness, and loss. The good semi-sextile(2nd house aspect) is one of gain, consolidation, or strengthening. It often brings gain or reward, especially material or financial.

The problem with the so-called bad aspects is that one's gain, resolution, or advancement(2nd, 6th, 10th) is another's loss, or undoing(4th, 8th, 12th), which is why they're called bad aspects in the first place, but from the individual's perspective, 2nd, 6th, and 10th are good while 4th, 8th, and 12th are bad. It's a matter of perspective. A positive way to look at the 4th, 8th, and 12th house aspects is to consider them as karmic releases. With the other aspects (conj-opp, trine, and sextile), there is no gain or loss, only an equal exchange, so that everything balances out.

The bad aspects and their dual nature of loss(water) and gain(earth)

In terms of aspect strength, first consider the sign and then the degree. I do not promote "out of sign" aspects. The signs establish the general mood. The closer the aspect is by degree, the more intense it becomes, especially if the outer or generational planets are involved(Mars to Pluto). There is more leeway with the faster personal planets, meaning Ascendant, Midheaven, Moon, Sun, Mercury and Venus. Also, a retrograde planet, either natally or transiting, will cause more problems or issues than one that is direct.
