SUBJECT: astrology question

Hi, Ive been reading your information on astrology and it's convinced me to start using the whole house system. I have a question about aspects though. With the whole house system would all planets in your first house for instance now be considered conjunct the ascendant? And if that's true would two planets in the same sign, regardless of the degree of separation, be considered conjunct? For instance, I used to use the Placidus system and my ascendant under that would be 2 degrees aries. My sun is 23 degrees aries. So now it would be conjunct the ascendant right? My moon is in Sagittarius, so now, just by virtue of being in another fire sign, would it be considered trine my Aries ascendant? I hope I didn't bog you down with too many questions, lol. Your information is very informative and I can see how the whole house system streamlines alot of the junk in astrology. I appreciate any help, Thanks.

Response:

Dear Matthew,

It depends on your definition of the word conjunct. All planets in one sign/house would be "loosely" conjunct with each other. I say loosely, because in astrology the word conjunct means close together(usually by a few degrees). A more appropriate term which the ancients used would be "with". So two planets in the same sign/house separated by a few degrees would be conjunct whereas the same planets separated by a large number of degrees would be "with" each other. The same principle applies to the other aspects and houses.

In your case, the Sun at 23 degrees Aries is "with" your Ascendant at 2 degrees Aries. Your Moon is trine to both your Sun and Ascendant(by sign) but how close or intense is that trine? Degrees tell us the strength or intensity of the aspect.

Consider the twelve signs/houses as twelve different rooms or buildings one after the other in a circle and the planets as people. Each room or buildig space is 30 feet(degrees) long(and perhaps even equally as wide -this is where declination comes into astrology as opposed to just longitude).

When a planet moves from one sign or house to another it moves to a different room or space. If there is aready someone in that sign or house the entering planet/person will take notice. The kind of reaction will depend on the distance between the two(in feet or degrees). Two planets/people in the same room(sign or house) far away from each other will react differently than two planets in the same room right next to each other. Proximity or distance will determine the intensity of the reaction. That is how degree aspects work.

"Out of sign" aspects were not considered by the ancients -it's like being on either side of a door or wall separating two different rooms.

The best proof of course is in your interaction with others. Sun in Aries will react positively to say Mars in Leo and negatively to Mars in Cancer no matter what the degrees. What's important is the underlying element or gender involved. Personally, I believe degrees have complicated and messed up astrology and are making us see the trees instead of the forest, and for that reason I am even willing to give them up entirely. Its a very personal issue with astrologers at this time, but eventually they will see the light. Truth is simple and beautiful -not complicated and ugly. Besides, who wants to memorize degrees and minutes? People have enough trouble just memorizing all of their own twelve planet/sign positions or those of others.
