Fasting for Spiritual Reasons

Dear Libra Rising,

Over the last two or three years the creeping suspicion came upon me that food indeed was a drug that affected my consciousness and eating it was detrimental to me, while perhaps necessary is some fashion. I thought that eating was a destructive act that required killing. I also guessed that sleep was some kind of temporary form of death.

The Libra Rising Article "Drugged Humanity" corroborated these three suspicions: http://www.librarising.com/health/drugged.html

I discovered that the main reason people eat is addiction rather than satisfaction of need because when I tried to experiment with fasting and became hungry I displayed the same symptoms as might be expected from and addict! When a smoker attempts to quit all his though processes revolve around getting the next smoke - the reward for everything, including quitting, is a smoke! "If I can just hold out till the end of the day I will have earned one!" --- I experienced this phenomenon with regards to food, everything I did revolved expending time to get closer to the time I could eat! I also showed more obvious symptoms of addiction such as crankyness.

I have tried to adjust my diet by cutting down on meat and avoiding things with yeast in them (bread and beer) as I gather that yeast processes you while you process it, But I don't know exactly what I should be eating and what I shouldn't when I do have to eat. I know you recommended fruit, especially oranges and grapes and I like these fruits so it suits me. For some reason sometimes I feel like I should avoid mushrooms (regular ones), is this an irrational feeling? Is it true that lettuce is poisonous as claimed by Stuart Wilde? because salad is clearly a welcome substitute for meat Conventional wisdom states "breakfast is the most important meal of the day" because it gets your metabolism going. Is their any truth in this? Usually I'm not especially hungry in the mornings but if I am intending to fast is it a good idea to eat an orange in the morning just to get things going or will this detract from the benefits of my fast? Also when I am fasting without drinking water by early evening my saliva has become very thick and sticky, should I continue my fast and wait till the next day to rehydrate myself of should I have a glass of water (I have a jug that filters my water), wash my mouth out or should I have a fruit like an orange? Is there any other advice you can offer me on what to consume?

What other measures can I take to help improve my ability to harness my higher spiritual functions?

I am also curious as to Libra Risings position on other intoxicants and hallucinagenics. Can drugs like magic mushrooms, ayahuasca, LSD, MDMA, etc. expand consciousness or do you think they are best avoided?

Best wishes and thanks for your time,

Antony

Response:

Dear Antony,

Thank-you for visiting my site and bringing up a most interesting subject or issue.

Let me start by saying that fasting for spiritual or health reasons is a very personal or highly individual aspiration and is not desired by everyone.

There are some dangers involved depending on your location and lifestyle.

If you live in the city or in a highly populated, polluted, or stressful environment, you are already at a disadvantage.

You can still fast under such conditions but there will be limitations.

Your state of mind is also very important. You must understand or be familliar with the fasting process and its consequences. From your letter, it is obvious you have come to your state after long consideration, study, or even trial, so you are basically ready to proceed.

The truth about food is that we will always be dependant on it to some degree, when you understand that there are different kinds or levels of it. Food is not only solids and liquids, but air/gas and light/radiation as well. And above that there is emotional, mental, and spiritual food.

In your case(and most all of us) we are concerned with solids and liquids.

As an infant you are basically a liquidarian drinkimg only mother's milk, and this is absolutely vital for us. Only in the case of breatharian parents will the child grow up without milk. From milk we go on to eat pablum which is basically a mix of mashed fruit and water and we are basically fruitarians. When our teeth start to come out we're ready to eat like the adults and bascally become vegans and/or carnivours.

By the time we are in our teens, all of the crap we are now eating unbalances the hormones and we become sexual beings.

Our social, economic, political, and religious systems continue to degenerate us and we end up old and decrepit and finally breathe our last breath. Another death, another failure.

The key to regeneration is to reverse the child-adult process. Start by becoming a vegan, which you are already doing, and spare all the animals their torture and suffering. If you must eat meat eat only the bloodless kind. Avoid, or cut down on milk products including cheese. Eat whole wheat grains, and avoid sugar and salt as much as you can(they're in nearly everthing we eat).

Try to eat as raw as possible -this basically means fruits, nuts, herbs, and vegetables. Cooked food is mostly dead food. The aroma you smell when you cook something is the life going out of it. Most vegetables are for animals rather than humans and cause a stupor or drug-like effect on the mind. I have never really liked lettuce and feel it is best avoided. I don't like mushrooms either. Tomatoes are the best vegetables(some call it fruit) because of their liquid content.

The only real fit food for humans is what grows on trees where it can be hand-picked and consumed immediately. Unfortunately most of us live in cities and in the cold zones, so we get an inferior product. Once, again, your environment will largely dictate the kind of diet you can live on. Becoming a fruitarian in a cold and polluted environment is not reccommended. One of the first things required for a utopian society is a warm and equable climate throughout the planet such as we once had in the pre-Flood World, and will hopefully have again in the not too distant future.

The other important thing is to change your diet SLOWLY, or comfortably. Your body will adapt if you give it enough time. Some will adapt quickly while others not at all. Just follow your intuition and common sense.

QUANTITY is just as important as QUALITY. Eating too much of anything or too many varieties at once can be detrimental. Eating only fruit(which is mostly water) will greatly heighten your senses. If you are in a dense or negative environment you will pick up all the vibes and go crazy. We often eat dense foods to desensitize ourselves to a negative environment or situation. Your body automatically attunes itself to its paticular environment and regulates its needs from there. Listen to it.

I live in a rural environment and am basically a vegetarian and part-time fruitarian. I eat fruit for breakfast(sometimes only bananas or an orange juice). The only people who need a big breakfast to get going are those who are highly intoxicated in the first place.

I work at home, so I have more liberty to control what or when I eat. I've fasted many times and can effortlessly go without food or water for at least twenty four hours. I've also gone on a thirty-day fruit fast without any ill effect except that I felt out of place with my relationships and environment. The longest I've been without any food OR water is three days, but then only in the safety of my home. The first day is easy. The second day difficult. It is at the end of the second day or the beginning of the third that I feel that magical feeling that I can continue to go on indefinitely.

If you feel thirsty after fasting, by all means drink, and especially if you are in a dry environment. Water will not upset or break your fast but fruit or fruit juice will.

I have never myself taken drugs or hallucinagenics and believe they are an artificial or unnatural means of inducing higher states of conciousness, so I avoid them. You can achieve the same results or better and with no side effects by keeping your body(and mind) pure. This means reducing and refining your food intake. Meditation is easier during or after fasting and is a complementary way of growing spiritually.

Everyone is different and you will have to find your own path or method of achieving health and enlightenment. Just keep reading and follow your intuition and common sense and you will get there.

Good luck to you, librarising
