| ...Montreal Canadians and the Toronto Maple Leafs, later expanding to
include the Boston Bruins(1924), The New York Rangers(1926), the Chicago Blackhawks(1926), and the Detroit Red wings(1926). These six teams became the
"Original Six" which dominated the Golden Era of NHL Hockey from 1942 to 1967. In 1967 the league doubled in size to include the Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota North Stars,
Philadelphia Flyers, Oakland Seals, and the St Louis Blues. The Vancouver Canucks and Buffalo Sabres were added in 1970, the New York Islanders and Calgary Flames
in 1972, and the Washington Capitals and New Jersey Devils in 1974. Also, in 1972 the WHA(World Hockey Association) was born as a competitor to the NHL untill its
absorption(by the NHL) in 1979. This added 4 extra teams to the NHL -Winnipeg Jets, Edmonton Oilers, Hartford Whalers, and Quebec Nordiques. In the 1990's the NHL
continued expanding to its current 30 teams including San Jose Sharks(previously the Oakland Seals/California Golden Seals) and Tampa Bay Lightning in 1991, Ottawa Senators
and Anaheim Ducks in 1992, Dallas Stars in 1993, Florida Panthers in 1994, Nashville Predators in 1998, Atlanta Thrashers in 1999, and Minnesota Wild and Columbus Blue Jackets
in 2000.
